The Rev. James L. Knappenberger, 66, of Slatington, died Friday, January 18, 2019 in his home. He was the husband of the late Pamela Susan (Peters) Knappenberger. Born in Allentown, March 12, 1952, James was the son of Shirley M.A. (Rumfield) Knappenberger at home and the late Warren W. Knappenberger. He was a graduate of Parkland High School, Class of 1970 and West Chester University Class of 1974 with a B.S. in Secondary Education. He continued his studies by graduating from Moravian Theological Seminary with a Masters in Divinity and was ordained in the United Church of Christ in 1977. Rev. Knappenberger began his ministry as a student pastor at St. Paul's U.C.C. Indianland. He then served Good Shepherd U.C.C. (formerly Holy Trinity) in Slatedale until 1990. He accepted the call of Senior Pastor at St. Paul's U.C.C. in Trexlertown from 1990-2007 and elected Pastor Emeritus in 2012. In his retirement, he served interim pastorates at Christ Church UCC, Bethlehem and Ben Salem UCC, Andreas. During his ministry, he served on the Board of Directors of Phoebe Terrace, two terms on the Board of Directors of the Penn Northeast Conference, and a General Synod Delegate. He served on the Planned Giving Committee and Education Divisions of the Conference as well as a two-term member of the Discernment Committee. Rev. Knappenberger was a member of St. Paul's U.C.C. Trexlertown.Survivors: In addition to his mother; daughter, Rebecca Amy Orth and her husband, David of Whitehall; son, The Rev. Joshua D. Knappenberger and his wife, Angela of Bethlehem; companion, Rose M. Borger with whom he resided; brothers, Glenn W. Knappenberger and his wife, Pamela of Washington Township, Frank A. Knappenberger and his companion, Bonnie Gardner of Lehigh Township, Gene Knappenberger and his wife, Debbie of Macungie; granddaughters, Cora, Lily and Eva.Service: Funeral services will be held 11:00 am. Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at Union U.C.C., 5550 PA Route 873, Neffs. Family and friends may pay their respects from 5 – 8:00 pm. Monday, in the Heintzelman Funeral Home, Inc., 4906 Route 309, Schnecksville and 9:30 – 10:50 am. Tuesday in memorial hall. Interment will follow the service at Union Church Cemetery, Neffs.
